Deference to a Sacred Landscape

Building near the Hampi UNESCO World Heritage Site is an exercise in restraint before it is one in design. The massing is kept to a single storey throughout, deferring to the boulder-strewn landscape, and every wall and floor is local granite quarried from a regulated site nearby — so the hotel is made of the same stone the Vijayanagara builders worked six centuries ago.

Proving Invisibility

A real proposal near the heritage zone would require formal view-impact assessment and regulatory approval. In this study, photomontage from multiple viewpoints is used as a design tool, while a planted roof is proposed to reduce the building’s apparent mass.

Fourteen Framed Views

Each of the fourteen proposed rooms is oriented to frame a different landscape element. Hand-dressed granite and collaboration with regional craftspeople are part of the concept brief and would need sourcing, budget, and conservation review.

Design intentions

  • View-impact study as a design method
  • Local granite craft strategy
  • 14 view-framed rooms
  • Green roof with native grass species
  • Solar-heated water system
  • Potential collaboration with regional stone artisans
