Three Generations, One Roof

The concept brief considers a joint family of three generations, each with different rhythms, sharing one home. It asks how the courtyard houses of Rayalaseema can inform a contemporary plan without being copied literally.

The Thotti as Organising Device

A central thotti — the open-to-sky court of the traditional Rayalaseema house — organises the entire plan. Around it, a pinwheel arrangement of wings gives each generation acoustic privacy, its own entrance, kitchenette, and outdoor sitting area, in graduated depth: reception spaces near the street, the grandparents’ quarters at the quietest rear corner. The family gathers naturally at the thotti for meals and evenings; the plan never forces it.

A Hundred-Kilometre Palette

The proposed palette prioritises Kadapa slabs, Kurnool limestone, and regional timber. Their thermal and maintenance performance, sourcing radius, and interaction with courtyard ventilation would need testing during detailed design.
